Kentucky Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell suffered a fall on the Senate stairs, just after casting his vote in favor of confirming Scott Turner as the new Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. This is just one more in a long line of “Senior moments,” McConnell has experienced in recent years, which is a pretty clear indication it’s time to retire.
According to Trending Politics News, the incident happened just after the confirmation vote was concluded. Sens. Steve Daines, a Republican from Montana, along with Markwayne Mullin, a Republican hailing from Oklahoma, were both present at the scene of the fall and provided McConnell assistance to help him get on his feet again.
McConnell is in stable condition, however, as of this writing, there aren’t a lot of specific details available about what happened and if the Kentucky Republican sustained any injuries.
The senator, who is 83, has had a number of health concerns as of late, including a pretty bad fall that took place in March 2023. That incident resulted in McConnell receiving a concussion and a broken rib. Pretty nasty injuries for a man of his age. Does anyone else think there should be age limits for Congress? Along with term limits?
McConnell was required to undergo rehabilitation in order to recover from that incident, though he obviously returned to his duties after he was fully recovered.
As of this writing, there has not been any official statement released by McConnell’s office concerning the fall that happened earlier today.
In April 2023, the BBC reported the following about incidents involving strange freezing up McConnell experienced during a press event:
At a press event in Covington, Kentucky, the 81-year-old paused for more than 30 seconds when asked whether he would run for-re-election in 2026. Aides attempted to prompt the senator, but it took several more seconds for Mr McConnell to recover. He then answered two more questions, which had to be repeated by staff. He made no comments about his health, before leaving with aides.
Mr McConnell’s first verbal lapse occurred during a press conference at the US Capitol in Washington DC on 26 July. There, he paused mid-sentence for approximately 20 seconds, before being ushered away by his fellow Republican senators. He later returned and told reporters he was “fine” and had felt “lightheaded”.
Mr McConnell, who leads the Republican party’s narrow minority in the upper chamber of Congress, was admitted to hospital for a week after suffering a concussion and a fractured rib following a fall outside a Washington area hotel in March.
Yeah. Definitely think it’s time for McConnell to call it a day.
