Conservative political pundit Candace Owens has left folks on both sides of the aisle more than a little stunned by saying she’s actually “glad” that infamous film producer Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction was overturned by a New York appeals court. The court made the announcement last Thursday, stating that Weinstein’s conviction will now be overturned after finding that the judge who presided over the case made several improper rulings, which included allowing a woman to provide testimony against him concerning allegations that were separate from the case.
“Weinstein was found guilty of rape in the third degree and a criminal sexual act in the first degree in February 2020. He was later convicted of rape and other sexual assault charges in a separate case in Los Angeles, and he will continue serving out the 16-year sentence in that case. He sought to appeal both verdicts,” Newsweek‘s latest article on the topic revealed.
The article then said, “The ruling quickly sparked discussion about Weinstein’s case on social media, including conservative commentator Owens, who voiced agreement with the charges being overturned.”
“You can say what you will about Harvey Weinstein, but the case against him in New York was one of the most absurd convictions I’ve ever seen. Read the case details. Full on witch hunt. Glad it was overturned. New York has a real problem,” Owens, who recently parted ways with the Daily Wire after an intense spat with Ben Shapiro, went on to say in a post published on X.
The conservative pundit then posted on the story a second time, saying that the courts “in general have become playgrounds for ‘social justice’ rather than actual justice.”
While Owens has been critical of Weinstein in various social media posts over the years, writing in May 2021 that he was able to “victimize people for years despite the fact that ‘everyone knew,'” she has raised concerns about his trial.
In February 2023, she questioned the testimony of an actress who testified against Weinstein, arguing that prosecutors were unable to place him at her hotel.
“They could not. She also lied multiple times on the stand. This conviction makes no sense,” Owens went on to say about Weinstein’s case. In a another post, she took an opportunity to clarify that her concerns with the conviction “do not make Harvey Weinstein a ‘good’ person.”
And she has a valid point, especially when you look at how the justice system is currently being used as a political weapon against former President Donald Trump. It’s pretty clear when you look at the four indictments against him that this is not about bringing someone corrupt to justice, but is instead a means of attempting to ensure that he loses the general election against President Joe Biden.
A spokesperson for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement that his office “will do everything in our power to retry this case, and remain steadfast in our commitment to survivors of sexual assault.”
This in no way means Weinstein is going to get off the hook for any potential crime. There is talk that there will be a new trial that will take place, though no additional information has been released that reveals when that might happen.
If Trump can win in November, let’s hope his highest priority is fixing the Justice Department and by extension the whole justice system, dismantling the the two-tiered justice system that exists right now and holding all people accountable to the law. Yes, even Democrats.
