A New York Democrat is trying to push a brand new piece of legislation that, if passed, will force the Christian owners of the hugely popular Chick-fil-A restaurant to open their doors on Sundays or risk having to remove a number of its restaurants from a major highway system that goes through the state. Leftists are truly nothing more than vile control freaks who want to force their beliefs on everyone else. Hilariously, this is exactly what they accuse Christians of doing all the time.
The Daily Wire is reporting:
Assemblyman Tony Simone, who is openly complaining that Chick-fil-A has a “terrible record on LGBT rights,” penned Bill A08336 to mandate that the New York State Thruway Authority only continue or enter into contracts with businesses that will stay open all seven days of the week.
“Chick-fil-A has had a terrible record on LGBT rights,” Simone whined in comments delivered to the New York Post last week. “I’m not going to not say that clearly.”
Well, that statement alone seems to reveal the real motivation behind this assault on the rights of a Christian-owned company, doesn’t it?
“To serve New Yorkers and travelers, things should be open seven days a week, including Chick-fil-A, and if they can’t they shouldn’t be in our rest stops,” he added. “There should be options for people to eat and drink and not just one spot.”
Is this guy trying to make a case that people are entitled to have Chick-fil-A or any other kind of restaurant food anytime they want it? Is Simone for real? Surely, he’s not serious. No one is entitled to partake of the products and services of a business. A person who owns and operates a company has the right to decide hours of operation. Period. No customer is entitled to what said corporation has to offer. This is common sense.
How can this be about anything other than taking revenge on a company that has Christian values, practices those principles, and does not go along with the insane wokeness of the times?
Notably, there is already a standard that at least one hot-food option is open and available at these rest stops on every day of the week to better accommodate travelers and truckers. If Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays at a given rest stop, for example, there is another restaurant open.
“Our requirement is that we have at least one hot food option available,” Thruway spokesperson Jennifer Givner went on to explain, according to a report from Business Insider. “If Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays we have other alternatives for our customers.”
There are currently seven Chick-fil-A restaurants on the interstate that would be affected by the bill, and at least three more of the restaurants slated to be built.
The popular restaurant chain is well known for not being open on Sundays in order to provide workers the opportunity to attend worship services if they so choose, or, if nothing else, have a day of rest to spend with family.
“Closing our business on Sunday, the Lord’s Day, is our way of honoring God and showing our loyalty to Him,” Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy said in his book, “Eat Mor Chikin: Inspire More People.”
“My children have committed to closing our restaurants on Sundays long after I’m gone,” he stated elsewhere in the book. “I believe God honors our decision and sets before us unexpected opportunities to do greater work for Him because of our loyalty.”
As highlighted by Catholic News Agency, this latest targeting of Chick-fil-A comes three years after three New York state legislators sent a letter to the executive director of the state Thruway Authority to urge him to “reexamine” the approval of Chick-fil-A to open locations along the highway system, citing a public stance against same-sex marriage from the restaurants’ ownership.
Conservatives in Congress need to fight this bill with everything they’ve got and ensure that it does not pass, protecting the religious liberty of Christian businesses everywhere and to keep intact a business owner’s rights to choose their own hours of operation. Customers should not be tyrants.
